California Poppies

I’m not the sort of person who normally goes around counting my blessings, but with our lives turned upside down due to COVID-19, I’m trying very hard to enjoy the smaller things in my life. Since 50% of my time away from work is spent doing on community meetings, volunteering, and trying to lobby elected officials to take care of Rose Creek, I now have time to stop and smell the flowers since everything is cancelled but nature in all her glory.

Orchids in bloom

My garden is growing. We’ve had rain and I’m enjoying weeding in the soft moist soil. Very gratifying. Once a section is done, I can see the difference right away. I no longer commute to work, but work from the comfort of my dining room. All that time commuting is now spent riding my bike along Mission Bay Park, a block from my house. My alarm goes off at 7:30 instead of 6:00 a.m. and I can still make it to work by 9 a.m.  My orchids starting blooming in January and are still going strong. When I was dishes, I can see them through the kitchen windows.

Luckily, chocolate, the nectar of the deities, is plentiful on grocery store shelves. Rose Creek is at the west end of my block and I’ve been out bird watching, walking and enjoying the scenery.  As Ram Dass said, “be here now” and enjoy these moments while life has slowed down.
